Summer Aid

Financial aid is available to eligible students during the Summer Session at Delaware State University.

REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for Summer aid, you must:

  • Be enrolled as a regular student in an eligible degree program. (Minimum enrollment requirements apply for certain aid programs.) Provisionally-admitted students are ineligible for Federal Student Aid.
  • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current award year. (For Summer 2023, file the 2022-2023 FAFSA.) File as early as possible, but no later than June 30.

Incoming Students (Summer Academy) – Complete all steps from the Summer Academy Checklist.

Continuing Students -

  • Must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress at the beginning of the Summer Session. Students on ‘Warning’ status for the Spring semester will be evaluated at the conclusion of Spring.
  • Register for Summer courses. See the next section for minimum credit requirements.

TYPES OF AID AVAILABLE

Summer financial aid is usually limited to:

  • Federal Pell Grant – Undergraduate students pursuing their first Associate or Bachelor’s Degree.  Amounts vary, based on an individual student’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and enrollment status.

*Note: Students who attended college full-time during the Fall & Spring semesters and received 100% of their Pell Grant award (including Payments received at other institutions), must be enrolled at least half-time (6 or more credits) for Year-Round Pell.

  • Federal Direct Loans - Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits Undergraduate, 3 credits Graduate).
    • Stafford (subsidized/unsubsidized) – student; no additional application needed
    • Parent PLUS – parent of dependent student;
    • Graduate PLUS – graduate/professional student;

*First-time Stafford Loan borrowers must complete an Entrance Counseling session and a Direct Loan Master Promissory Note, both by logging in at https://studentaid.gov

  • Student Employment - Offers are determined each year based on funding availability.
  • Alternative Education Loans – Creditworthy students and/or co-signers who do not qualify for Federal Student Aid and/or cannot make payment arrangements for their educational expenses, can apply for an alternative loan. Begin the process.

FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT SUMMER AID ELIGIBILITY

  • Dropping or Withdrawing from Courses After Summer Session Has Begun - Change in enrollment can impact your aid eligibility. Contact the Office of Financial Aid before dropping individual courses or withdrawing from the Summer session.

*Example – Student initially registers for 3 credits Session I and 3 credits Session II; eligible for Year-round Pell Grant based on halftime enrollment. Student drops Session II course before classes begin. Year-round Pell will be canceled.

  • Annual Direct Stafford Loan Limits – Amounts received from previous Fall and/or Spring semesters may reduce your remaining eligibility for Summer.* Annual limits based on grade level and dependency status.
  • Aggregate Aid Limits
    • Pell Grants – Students are limited to 600%, or six years equivalent. *
    • Direct Stafford Loans (subsidized/unsubsidized) – undergraduate and graduate limits.
    • PLUS Loans (parent and graduate) do not have aggregate limits but may be reduced, based on your Summer cost of attendance.

*Transfer Students – Federal Student Aid received at your previous institution(s) are factored into the above annual and aggregate limits.

  • Incomplete Files – The Office of Financial Aid notifies you if a document is missing, e.g., Verification, Master Promissory Note. Log in to Banner Self Service from my.desu.edu, to check your status for the current award year.

UNIVERSITY BILLING

Tuition & fees and, if applicable, residence hall room & board will be charged to your Summer bill beginning in May. The University bill must be paid by the due date, regardless of delays, reductions, or cancellation of financial aid.

Questions regarding the University bill or the impact of not paying the University bill should be directed to the studentaccounts [at] desu.edu (subject: Student%20Accounts%20General%20Questions) (Office of Student Accounts).

DISBURSEMENT

Financial aid will be disbursed on the first day of your summer class. If you are registered for Summer Sessions I and II, full disbursement of your award(s) may be delayed until you begin attendance for Session II.
